EXHIBITION IN THE COOKING

With kind encourgement of HE Vara-poj and Khun Pasherin, I would have my first exhibition in a green house on the upper deck of their English cafe and tea room called Cassia on Sukhumvit 31, not far from PM's residence!

Supa and I went for an initial discussion on 5 Mar, the place is rather small, currently housing some 6 tables with an out door terrace for another 2 tables, good for a small start.

The idea of the exhibition was first casually brought up in the Facebook network not long ago. I was really excited since it is my first one-man exhibition. However, I later on develop the idea of being just an art exhibition into something more meaningful, as far as I am concerned. Since I am not actually an artist, I see the exhibition as an opportunity to introduce my interest in sketching. The idea seems to get on well with Khun Vara-poj, so, we went ahead.
The Cassia cafe and tea room is such a lovely place, homely and delicious all at once, not the least as a place to hang around and to be seen. It is also very central at 300 meter from Sukhumvit Road.
The exhibition area on the upper fully air-con green house is bright, light and, you know what I realised later, one kind of a gallery unlike any in the wall! It is the only full height GLASS wall gallery! where you will appreciate the leafy shade of nature all around you.

More on my first exhibition soon, on other activity and problems. How shall I hang my paintings on glass wall, how do I display those sketchbooks, etc, since none of us have such experience, it's not only that it is my first exhibition but also that we have never seen one before in Bangkok!!

WHY FOLDING SKETCHBOOK?

A good question, indeed! Well, perhaps, let me say WHY folding sketchbook before I come to WHAT is skechbook.
I have been doing skethces on some small size books where ever I go for quite sometime now. It is most enjoyable while doing it on site but I also find looking through them later on just as enjoyable, if not more! However, it came to my realisation that those sketches seem to be just as meaningful to my fellow travelers who quickly associate my sketches with their own sentiments and experience of the trip. And that's when I feel that I would like to share my sketchbooks with friends and others who might have been to such places before, either on their own or with their friends.
Therefore, that's my WHY for a folding sketchbook. It is to share my sketches with friends and those who have been to places, in a form of a casual easy folded pages that's convenient to enjoy, you don't need to bother to read as a book and something more satisfying than a single postcard. The real WHY of folding sketchbook is that this sketchbook is intended to be like your own memorable experience folded into something light yet substantial that you carry with you in you shirt pocket, standing it up on your work desk or dressing table, any where!

Now, when the why is done, the WHAT shall be surprisingly easy. I am not going to make you read the following thousand or so words of explaination but rather showing you PICTUREs of my folding sketchbook instead. That's easy on you and more fun, I hope. Enjoy!!

With some views of the folding sketchbook, I am certain you have a pretty good idea of what it is. In words, if you would allow, it is my most exciting undertaking next to doing sketches itself. I am putting the sketches I love the most in an attempt of sharing them with all. So that you too, could enjoy them since it will be impossible for me to part with my own original sketchbook. And I don't think making a BOOK of a skechbook make any sense to me, at least for now ;-) so, here it is, a folding sketchbook and the WHY and WHAT of it all!
Please, do let me have your thinking, your idea of traveling, meeting people, your reaction to places you've been to and how and what is your means of keeping and sharing those wonderful moments and memories. I would appreciate your feed back and opinion, please share with me.

It would be an ideal display manner to have viewers experience what they are viewing, the sketchbooks. They should be able to hold, feel, flip and scrutinise all the marks and the mess left behind by the book's creator. That kind of experience might be achieved some where, in Tokyo or New York, but I just still could not imagine Bangkok!
However, my next attempt was something that I am putting in below:

But it may not be possible even that, at the end, it probably ended up some flat opened bookd pasted deadly on the wall, we'll see!

25th SketchCrawl in Bangkok

Last Saturday saw sketchers all over the places, we had just a few in Bangkok this time, but with just as much meaning and fun. I determined to go alone this time eyeing an area of old Siam on western end of an historical road below the grand palace. Some how, I was contacted by a 4th year arch. student from Rungsit U to come along, so we went and had a fun sketching day.

We started off from the historical theater of Bangkok, Chalermkrung Royal theater, the first air-conditioned cinema built to celebrate Bangkok's 150 anniversary in 1930s. It used to be an icon of entertainment world, survived the new generation of MULTIPLEX today as the only theater to perform Thai traditional mask dance "Khone".
The New Road cut through several other roads. It is interesting that all such intersection of the era were created full of characteristic. Unlike modern days junctions that were so indifferent and messy. Sao Chingcha junction is one of the great street scape with a grand circular space. Others included Phrayasri junction which was built in era of King Rama 5 (1870s)
In this sketchcrawl, the magic of sketching touched on us when a young lady stop by with her mother. This 6 years old lady in white dress stayed with us for a long while showing her own sketches of her dad with broad neck tie and black shoes. Her steady hand that produced confident line strokes confirmed her mother's proud claim that she is the best in her primary 1 class. She even used my pentel brush pen to write a few lines of chinese poems! I presented my only brush pen as her present (will get a new one tomorrow!)

Sketching in Bangkok could be both fun and, dangerous, especially along this old section of town as the walk way is narrow. However, here is somewhere you could be free of road side vendors that infested all the newer parts of town. But we did not go hungry, after the whole day of street life, we ended up early evening at a unique, alternative bookshop called PASSPORT, a charming small book cafe that has only two tables surrounded by but not just thousand of books but as well as a few hundreds more of every other things including those that you could not think of! And here's how it looks like, to me.
We ended our 25th SketchCrawl with the famous pad thai not far away, and you know how it was like when one is with friends for meals, you forgot everything else.. so, there's no sketch of the famous pad thai, not even the photos of the empty plates, sorry!

Hello Bhutan

ผมไปเที่ยวภูฐานกับสยามสมาคมฯจากวันที่ 1 ถึง 12 พค. 2552 ได้รับพร้อมทั้งความรู้และความสนุก กับประสบการณ์ ทิวทัศน์และรูปเสก็ตช์จำนวนหนี่ง
ด้วยสายการบินประจำชาติ Druk Air ของภูฐาน เราใช้เวลาบินประมาณ 5 ชั่วโมงก่อนร่อนลงสนามบิน Paro ในระหว่างหุบเขาใหญ่สองลูก ซึ่งดูสวยประทับใจมาก ทั้งระหว่างร่อนจะลงและเมื่อมองจากระยะไกลหลังเครื่องได้ลงเรียบร้อยแล้ว ความยากง่ายในการร่อนลงกลางเขาสองลูกของสนามบินที่ได้ชื่อว่าขึ้นลงยากเป็นหนึ่งของโลก ไม่เคยอยู่ในมุมใดในหัวสำหรับผู้มาเยีอนเป็นครั้งแรกอย่างผมครับ

เมื่อเข้าในท่าอากาศยาน ก็ประทับใจเป็นอย่างมาก กับการประดับประดาสุดสดใสของสีสันลวดลายอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ประจำชาติ ตามด้วยเครื่องแบบเจ้าหน้าที่สนามบิน ที่นอกจากสวยด้วยสีและลายแล้ว ก็ยังทำให้บรรยากาศการตรวจคนเข้าเมือง ดูผ่อนคลายน่าสบายใจอย่างประหลาด น่าจะเป็นแบบอย่างสำหรับประเทศต่างๆ ว่าบรรยากาศแรกเข้าเมืองสำคัญต่อผู้มาเยือนอย่างไร มีปัญหานิดเดียวสำหรับการเยือนภูฐานตรงที่ต้องตั้งสติอยู่พัก ว่าไม่ได้กำลังเดินเข้าร้านอาหารญี่ปุ่นนะ เท่านั้นเอง

จากตัวเมือง เราเดินทางไปวัดทาชิโจ บนเขาแห่งหนึ่ง การเดินทางขึ้นลงไปตามเนินเขานี้ใช้เวลาไปกลับเที่ยวละชั่วโมงครึ่งเป็นอย่างน้อย แต่ความงามระหว่างทางและตัววัดนั้น คุ้มเกินความเหนี่อยเป็นหลายเท่า

ภูฐานมี Dzong (ป้อมปราการที่แปรเปลี่ยนเป็นหน่วยบริหารการปกครองผสมกับกิจกรรมด้านศาสนา) ที่แทรกอยู่กับวิถีชีวิตประจำวันของชาวภูฐาน และ Lhakhang (วัดที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อกิจกรรมทางศาสนาโดยตรง) กระจัดกระจายอยู่ทั่วไปไมน้อยกว่า 2000 แห่งบนเนื้อที่ประเทศประมาณ 50000 ตร กม ที่มีประชากรประมาณ 6-7 แสนคนเท่านั้น
รูปเสก็ตช์ด้านล่างนี้เป็น ลักษณะทั่วไปของดซองแห่งหนึ่ง ประกอบด้วยกำแพงอาคารด้านนอกล้อมรอบเป็นกรอบสี่เหลียมสูงประมาณ 3-4 ชั้น บริเวณกลางลานกว้างภายในกำแพงเป็นอาคารหลัก มักเป็นหอคอยด้วย ที่จะเป็นส่วนประกอบพิธีทางศาสนา คล้ายโบสถ์ของวัดไทย

การเยือนภูฐานคือการเที่ยวชม Dzong มากมายหลายแห่ง ซึ่งล้วนแตกต่างกัน ทั้งประวัติความเป็นมา ความแตกต่างและเอกลักษณ์ที่น่าสนใจ ตลอดจนอายุ ยุคสมัยในการสร้าง ตลอดจนความแตกต่างของการดัดแปลงใช้งานในปัจจุบันที่หลากหลาย เที่ยวจนสับสนปนเปในที่สุด

Gangtey Lhakhang เป็นวัดสำคัญบนยอดเขาแห่งหนึ่งใน Talo สูงประมาณ 3000 เมตรเหนือระดับน้ำทะเล รูปเสก้ตช์รูปนี้ ได้รับพรด้วยการเซ็นชื่อโดยท่านเจ้าอาวาส Trulku Thinley ซึ่งถือ(ได้รับการพิสูจน์รับรองแล้ว)ว่าเป็นลามะที่กลับชาติมาเกิดองค์หนี่ง

เดินทางต่อถึงช่วงกลางของภูฐานบนความสูงประมาณ ประมาณ 3000 เมตรเหนือระดับน้ำทะเล ส่วนที่ราบกว้างกลางหุบเขาสูงใหญ่ Black Neck Crane Valley เนื้อที่กว้างใหญ่มากเป็นที่เหล่านกกระยางคอดำยึดเป็นแหล่งพำนักในช่วงหน้าร้อน พักที่โรงแรม Dawenchen ในหุบเขาที่ Phobjika เป็นโรงแรมเล็กๆ น่ารัก พร้อมเตาผิงใช้ฟืนในห้องนอน เพราะกลางคืนหนาว Phobjika ไม่มีระบบไฟฟ้าทั้งนี้ เพราะเกรงว่าเสาไฟและสายไฟจะมีผลกระทบระบบความเป็นอยู่ของเหล่ากระยางคอดำที่มาเยือนปีละครั้ง โรงแรมต้องใช้เครื่องปั่นไฟซึ่งปิดหลังสามทุ่มครึ่งด้วย ก็เลยสนุกกับการเติมท่อนฟืนไม้สนเนื่ออ่อน ติดไฟง่ายแต่ไม่นาน ต้องเติมใหม่ทุก 20 นาทีครับ

ในการวาดรูประหว่างท่องเที่ยวเรียนรู้ที่ภูฐานนี้ รางวัลที่มีค่าที่สุดคือมิตรภาพจากสหายน้อยๆหลายคน เณรน้อยเหล่านี้ พลิกสมุดรูปวาด เพลิดเพลินกับหลายแห่งที่บันทึกไว้ด้วยเส้นหมีกและดินสอ ดีใจเมื่อเจอบางรูป ของสถานที่ที่รู้จัก จำได้ ด้วยเสียงที่ตื่นเต้น ด้วยแววตาที่อยากรู้ และด้วยสีหน้าที่กระตือรือล้น ผมได้แต่ตื้นตัน ที่มีโอกาสนั้นในช่วงลมหายใจนั้น กลางเพื่อนน้อยๆที่เพิ่งรู้จัก ได้ทำในสิ่งที่ให้ความสุขกับอีกสองสามชีวิตนี้

I have no idea if that was the first time this young Bhutanese ever see a sketchbook. But I hope they enjoy the sketches as much as we all do and like the idea of doing sketches.

23rd World SketchCrawl Day from Bangkok

เริ่มแต่ 8 โมงเช้า นัดเดิมที่วันโพธ์ ปรากฎว่าอาจารย์อารีกลับจากการสอนพิเศษที่สุรินทร์ไม่ทัน ผมและ อ. ปราโมทย์เลยไถลไปตลาดหน้าท่าเตียนแทน อะไรซะอีก โจ๊กหมูใส่ไข่นะซีครับ ก็รู้ๆกันอยู่

หลักฐานครับ งานชิ้นแรก เริ่มแต่เช้า (จะให้จดเย็น แบบมาราธอนไงครับ)
จากนั้น เราก็เตร็ดเตร่เร่ไปตามน้ำ เจอร้านยอดเยี่ยมด้านซ้ายมือของท่าเรือข้ามฟากครับ อ.ปราโมทย์ตรงเป๊ะที่มุมเหมาะก่อนผมจะร้องคว้าเก้าอี้ทันครับ

ผมตลุยล่ะ เห็นเรือข้ามฟากตรงหน้า ก็ซัดซะตามระเบียบ

ความเด๋อที่ไม่น่าอภัยเลยของผมก็คือ ผมฟังไม่ได้ศัพท์ ว่าอาจารย์ Ai(สอน Computer Science ที่บางมดครับ ร่วม SketchCrawl มา 2-3 ปีแล้ว) มาไม่ได้ แต่ความจริง ไปรอ(วาด)เดี่ยวในโบสถ์พระนอนวัดโพ ตั้งกะ 8 โมงเข้า ตามนัดเป๊งแล้ว
อย่างไรก็ตาม อ. Ai ก็ยังกรุณาให้อภัย ตามมาร่วมด้วยสั้นๆ เพราะมีสอน 10 โมงเช้า ก็เลยได้คุยกันเพียงสั้นๆ โชว์งานที่เขียนมาสักชั่วโมงเศษ ตั้งแต่เช้าครับ คนละอัน สองอัน

อ. Ai กลับตอน 9 โมงกว่า ผมและอ.ปราโมทย์ก็ว่ากันต่อ ได้วัดอรุณกันคนละฉาก ขวาบนสีสดใสของอ.ปราโมทย์ ของผมซ้ายล่างครับ แบบฉับพลัน ไร้กังวลครับ

ภาคบ่ายครับ พอ อ.ปราโมทย์กลับ ผมก็ลุยต่อกับคุณพิบูลย์สองคน
จากโอลด์สยาม เราเดินข้ามสพานพุทธ ลมแดดจัดแต่ลมตึง กลิ่นแม่น้ำ พาหวลกลับตอนเป็นเด็กกระโดดเล่นน้ำ คลองแถวบางวัวครับ
ลานเชิงสะพานทั้งสองฝั่งแม่น้ำน่าใช้ให้เป็นประโยชน์ได้ แต่ตอนนี้ ใช้เป็นที่เก็บขยะ เอาละ ขยะก็ขยะ จะเสก็ตช์ให้ได้ อย่างที่เห็นในรุปนี่แหละครับ คุณพิบูลย์ หน้ารถขยะ ส่วนผมอยู่ข้างรถขยะ ปักหลักยึดม้าหินเป็นป้อมครับ

สะพานพุทธในจินตนาการของคุณพิบูลย์ครับ
ยังอุตส่าห์มีสีสันงดงาม คงเป็นเพราะหันหลังให้รถขยะนั่นเอง

ตามด้วยวิวเจ้าพระยาฝั่งตรงข้ามครับ

ผมไม่เคยรู้เลย ว่าแค่ข้ามอีกฝั่งของแม่น้ำ เรามีที่เดินเล่นได้อย่างนี้

สภาพชีวิตแบบหนี่งริมแม่น้ำ

ขอพักแค่นี้ก่อนครับ เดี๋ยวจะยาวเกินไป
อย่างไรก็ตาม หลายคนคงเดยรู้เรี่องชุมชนหนึ่ง
รู้จักกันในชื่อ กุฎีจีน นะครับ
โดยไม่ได้ตั้งใจ ผมและคุณพิบูลย์ก็กำลังลุยเข้ามาในชุมชนนี้แหละครับ
เราได้เห็น ได้วาดบรรยากาศของกุฎีจีนที่ว่านี้

What PERSPECTIVE DRAWING is to an architect

Do you think architect is an artist or someone that at least must be able to draw a straight line or two? Well, think about it, find out for yourselve!
Some architects can, some can't, some are good at it and some don't necessarily have to do that, drawing, I mean.
Architects do a lot of things, indeed, more than known to a lot of people. However, architects are trained to draw as part of their training and practice but things have changed. Architectural students still have to learn to draw, to sketch and even certain level of drafting on paper but most would soon leave that behind and just rely solely on computer and, you know that, autocad or sketchup or equivelent.
I did of sketches drawings, perspective drawings not much of drafting but that's only at the later part of my career. Followings are some of my work during my working years in Singapore.

A study perspective of a holiday resort.

An out door food court where the focus was on people and very little of architecture!

Another ambient or mood concept more than building.

As oppose to this very serious expression of building type.

To an exterior scene of a larger project scope. And finally the full scale over all view of the entire project.

Perspective drawings, whether they be hand drawn, Sketchup-ed, Studio Max-ed or what so ever, would always be a breath away, never too far to an architect's life. Now the question really is: whose nose would an architect choose in using?

YUNNAN: My first China Trip

Sat 10 Nov 07 with Siam Society from Bangkok to Kunming. The first stop was at a chinese temple heavy with sight, sound, smoke and prayers. Out side by the street was another story of dashing street children trying to attract for your attention in hope of a few coins. Understandable but kind of hard to react for any new visitors. Dear boys and people, I would like to be your firends, give me time to adjust, alright!

After some walking around, found a more quiet corner and managed to get a glimps of the temple of my own perception: brush pen on water paper in a quick! With a color wash in hotel room later on, the below is the result.

Sun 11, we took a boat in Er Hai lake to a small fishing village.

Then back to the local market in town to be part of their usual activities from flowers to chilies and more..

What SKETCHING is to an architect.

Architects do tons of sketches in the course of their work. You usually start your thinking cab with doodles or sketches, trying it out on paper before firming it up to something more comprehensible. However, all this early stage creation material rarely survive the waste basket: they get thrown away as soon as the next piece comes along. What a pity! They are different kind of sketches but just as interesting! Some sketches are expressive, even bright or colorful although most are full of repeated lines and, quite often, blobs of blacks.

Architects also do lots of what's known as "perspective". Perspective that's more common and appreciated is a kind of "commercialised" or final perspective rendering aiming to convince the general public. Architects also get their design illustrated, more often than not by yet another group of specialists or artists, as part of their presentation to the clients. All these "highly professional and polished" rendering can surprisingly costly to produce.

There are also a "sketchy" type of perspective that is less obvious or known beyond architects' office or studios. This type of perspective is not intended for use to please anyone but, for all it's worth, it is this type of sketches that I feel most valuableAn example of quick sketch as a study of a residential project.Another study of a commercial project at the very early stage.An architectual record of now demolished of Jubilee Theatre along North Bridge Road in Singapore. As the person who did this drawing myself, it is so much more meaningful, visually as well as sentimentally, than any photographic or any other means of recording can ever produced.

Another samples of quick line works study that's good enough to capture the intended desigh direction of the project too.
